Opportunities 📌
UM Arts event of interest to GEECS
I’m writing to you as the faculty lead for Search Engines, a programming series situated at the intersection of new media art, emerging technology, and social justice. I think our next event, on February 8th, might be of interest to GEECS members!
At 4 PM, we'll be hosting artist Lauren Lee McCarthy for an interactive, Zoom-based performance. McCarthy’s work examines social relationships in the midst of surveillance, automation, and algorithmic systems. You can find more information about the event here.
Earlier, at 1 PM, we're hosting a creative coding workshop with Lauren. The workshop will provide a hands-on introduction to creative coding via p5.js, a platform that prioritizes access and diversity in learning to code. We've still got a few slots available for the workshop -- if there are any GEECS members who'd like to attend, they can register by emailing Giselle Mills, at gimills@umich.edu, as long as slots last.
We’d very much appreciate it if you’d consider passing this event and workshop along to your members. Please do let me know if you have any questions or would like more information, and I hope the Winter semester is treating you well!
Sincerely,
Jeff Nagy
Recruitment! STEM Escape Room Game Experiment!
As a student currently or previously enrolled in a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) major, you are invited to participate in an in-person research study. Dr. Denise Sekaquaptewa in the UM Department of Psychology is currently seeking STEM students to participate in the Stem Escape Room Games Experiment (SERGE), a study on perceptions of and responses to STEM related puzzle activities. If you participated in the study last semester please do not sign up again.
If you are interested in participating, please fill out this google form:
https://forms.gle/CS3MWRecwzvGFpUQ8
The study involves watching a brief video, and reporting your reactions to it, followed by questions about prospective materials for a STEM escape room. You will then engage in a developing escape room task and provide feedback on the activity. The study will take approximately 60 minutes to complete. Participants will receive $20 cash as compensation for completing the survey at the end of the study session.
Participation in this study is completely voluntary, and is not connected in any way to your evaluation in your courses. Your participation will help the researchers better understand the experiences of college students and how they work together on teams.
This study has been reviewed by the University of Michigan Institutional Review Board (HUM00229316).
This study opportunity will be available until all opportunities are filled. Available time slots will be updated once a week. If you are unable to find availability the first time you check, please look back later on to schedule a session.
Feel free to contact the researchers via the emails below with any questions you may have.
Thank you.

The purpose of this event is to provide a supportive space for University of Michigan student survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, harassment, and stalking to tell their stories. We welcome all types of expression and we will be accepting anonymous, pre-submitted stories to be read by SAPAC volunteers. All identities are welcome. All members of the campus community are invited to listen and offer support as survivors share
the complexities of healing in the wake of sexual violence.
There will be an open mic for attendees who wish to speak. Survivors also have the option to submit their stories anonymously here to be read aloud by SAPAC volunteers if they do not feel comfortable doing so themselves.
In order to minimize disruptions for those sharing, we encourage you to stay for the duration of the event. There will be a break half-way through the event where participants can enter or leave.
